Madness let loose on the streets of New York City in 1980. Photographer Jill Furmanovsky recalls, “There was a cultural difference between Madness and America. I remember the baffled faces of the welcoming committee at Warner Brothers Records when the band exploded out of the elevator, fell as one to their knees, and began ’worshiping’ the company logo woven into the carpet. This shoot was for Issue No.1 of a new magazine that developed cult status, The Face.”

In 1980, the band’s second album, Absolutely reached number 2 in the UK album charts. Absolutely spawned some of the band’s biggest hits, most notably “Baggy Trousers”, which peaked at number 3 in the UK singles chart. “Embarrassment” reached number 4 in the charts, and the instrumental song “The Return of the Los Palmas 7″ climbed to number 7.
